Tik Kar is three months old and was born with club feet. She has a brother and a sister, both normal. When Tik Kar's parents released that she was deformed; they were very sad. They were worried and frightened about her future. She would be rejected and have no opportunity to marry once she had grown up; said the mother. With the uncertainty of her future both parents started blaming each other for the daughter's disability. The father accused the mother of unnecessary medications she had taken during her pregnancy, which resulted in his daughter's disability. Tik Kar's mother was
hurt and felt betrayed and left for her parent's home.
Fortunately, Tik Kar's family lives in the neighborhood of one of the ADRA/CBR staff. When our colleague learnt about Tik Kar and the dispute between the parents he decided to talk to both of them. He told them about the importance of the daily stretching of the baby's legs to prevent them from bending and trained three of the family members (mother, father and aunt) how to carry out the exercise. Two weeks Tik Kar was referred to Taiz Rehabilitation Center to assess her level of improvement and the next steps to be taken. The physiotherapist was pleased with the service ADRA/CBR worker had given to the baby. He recommended the use of a plastic brace to keep the feet from bending in again. Tik Kar was fortunate to have been given physical therapy from age zero. She is progressing rapidly because she had an early chance to correct her feet.
The steady progress of Tik Kar made the parents very happy. They appreciate the support of ADRA. Tik Kar's father prays for God's blessings upon ADRA/CBR project workers and donors and states that his next child will be named ADRA!
